I finally got Starter reinstalled and working fine after a few attempts, but now the Microsoft Office 2010 shortcut in the start menu is missing it’s icons and the icons on Word and Excel documents are missing too, even though they still open fine.

If Word Starter 2010 or Excel Starter 2010 cannot be opened, uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office Starter 2010:

  1. Click Start (or Start > Run in Windows XP).

  2. Type appwiz.cpl, and then press Enter.

    Warning Do not remove Microsoft Office 2010 from the list of installed programs. You will need this to reinstall Microsoft Office Starter 2010.

  3. Click Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and then click Uninstall (or Remove in Windows XP).

  4. Click Yes and follow the instructions to uninstall Office Starter 2010.

  5. To reinstall Office Starter 2010, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office 2010.

  6. Click Use.

  7. And then click Open. This will reinstall Office Starter 2010.


    If the error continues to occur, you may have to do a full restore of the computer to reinstall Microsoft Office Starter 2010. We recommend you contact the computer manufacturer to talk about your options before you do this.

First off, I had issues installing this stating that the files were not found to install and the error lead to the fact that it needed an OEM preload in order to install this. I was first very unhappy thinking MS was just giving this to OEM owners (which in some respect prior was correct)but now, it's completely free. After trying other installs, etc... I uninstalled Office 2007, this now installed so I'm not sure what the issue is there but regardless, it worked. All that aside, it may be scaled down, have ads but at least it gives people(especially college students who struggle to get word 2010)a chance to use it without restriction in that regard so I have to say, this is a good thing. Open Office is of course a great alternative, however, many colleges won't accept you using it in class or otherwise since they stick to standards. Again, that's why this is a GOOD thing. The setup is very quick and painless and so far, the ads are very non-intrusive and don't hinder any work whatsoever. I have to be honest and give this a 5 star. Don't forget, you also get Excel, Picture Manager and others with this so yeah, it's not extremely hindered. Review details
